Marin Drawstring Top

If you are like me, I wear comfy clothes more often than I wear anything else. They are definitely a rotating staple in my closet. However, I have one shirt in particular that is one of my favorite go to comfy tops. I normally wear it paired with leggings on a casual day, but it also pairs well with workout shorts or jeans. I regretted not buying this shirt in multiple colors, so I decided to hack the Styla Marin pattern to replicate the top. There are hardly any modifications needed, so it is super simple. Follow along to learn how to make the Marin drawstring top!

Step 1: Cut out the "crop" top length shirt front and back and simple short sleeve. If in between sizes I recommend sizing up as the original inspo shirt is definitely relaxed fit. I am between sizes, for the pink top I sized up instead of cutting between sizes. For the cream top, I sized up one additional size for an even more relaxed fit.

Step 2: Assemble the shirt front and back and sleeves as directed in the pattern.

Step 3: Find the center bottom front of the shirt and mark it with a disappearing marking tool. Measure out 5/8" (1.6 cm) both directions from the center mark and 1 1/2" (3.8 cm) up from the bottom, raw edge. Mark both new spots with a disappearing marking tool.

Step 4: Insert grommets or 1/4" buttonholes centered over the marks just made.

Step 5: Turn the top wrong side out. Fold the bottom of the shirt 1" (2.5 cm) wrong sides together. Pin/clip the hem in place. Turn the shirt right side out and make sure the grommets/buttonholes are vertically centered in the 1" hem. Sew to secure the hem using a coverstitch or long, straight stitch.

Step 6: Hem the sleeves and attach the neckband as directed in the tutorial.

Step 7: Choose a drawstring for the top. You can also make a drawstring using the shirt fabric. Guide the drawstring through one grommet/buttonhole, around the shirt hem and out the remaining front grommet/buttonhole. Lightly cinch the hem of the shirt and then tie the drawstring.

Step 8: Enjoy your drawstring Marin top!
